BIRD NOTES EARLY APRIL ON LI

I have been observing our avian neighbors visitors to our bird feeder.  Our most common have been Gold Finches, Cardinals, House finch and Song Sparrows.  Most recently I noted the appearance of a Cowbird, and a few Grackles. The Mourning Doves are common foraging on the ground below the feeder.

In late March I noticed that the Goldfinches and the House Finches were starting to moult.  the Goldfinch males look a bit strange, with patches of olive drab winter plumage in a mottled pattern of bright yellow and a bit of black  beginning to appear on the their crowns.  The same can be said for the House Finches.  The males with patches of bright red on the chest and head.

But the big story was the appearance of two Bald Eagles seen over the Miller Place High school grounds on on Monday about 7:00 PM.

Not unprecedented but a nice surprise.  Keep an eye out for.this pair.
